Authored parts

Official virtual elements which make part of the LDraw library.

If you are interested in authoring parts for the LDraw system (they are always looking for new authors) just give it a try. Never give up! Just keep in mind that all the senior authors once had to overcome the same difficulties you are facing.

I started designing parts for the LDraw system in April 2002. Having already had some experience with 3D-modelling, re-engineering the "Minifig Shield Round" (3876.dat) was fairly easy. Major headaches were only caused by the specs of a new file format with its odd inverted Y-axes and the strange handling for dithered colors.
By the time I submitted the "Baseplate 32 x 32 with Craters" (3947.dat) in mid september 2002 - so far the biggest file ever modeled within the LDraw parts library - I was thinking I knew almost everything about parts designing.
I was proven wrong! It took almost a year to master "Back Face Culling (BFC)", little tricks like matrix-mirroring or how to properly handle "conditional lines" combined with LDraw primitives. Sometimes it was just finding "my way" (like Frankie said) and toying around with all those software tools. Curious enough I never used LDraw or LEdit! At this point I'd like to thank people like Travis Cobbs, Chris Dee, Orion Pobursky, Ildefons Zanette (in alphabetical order), the reviewers and the rest of the gang at forums.ldraw.org, who showed me some shortcuts. Have a look at the table below to see where this way led to. The chart is sorted in chronological order. You will notice a tendency towards parts used in "Classic Space" and "Western" - well those are my favorite themes. As a little boy I always dreamt of being an astronaut or "Sitting bull" ;-) .My aim is to complete those themes some day.
